EVENT SUMMARY
The New Frontier program at Sundance Film Festival 2020 was more robust than ever before. Split across three venues, New Frontier highlighted experiences involving room-scale VR, augmented reality, and a communal 360 cinema.
Over the course of the 10 day festival, The Box at The Ray screened two VR shorts programs, each followed by a filmmaker Q&A. The programs - curated by Shari Frilot and Milo Talwani, were split between narrative and documentary. The programs spanned the globe, with each piece demonstrating a unique perspective on immersive storytelling.
MY ROLE
I worked directly with the New Frontier team to execute their vision for the VR cinema. Ahead of the festival, I coordinated VR hardware sponsorship, secured additional theater staffing, managed submission deadlines and testing schedules, and liaised between the selected filmmakers and the festival. On the ground, I was responsible for daily production in the VR Cinema, ensuring that programs were facilitated smoothly and maintaining quick turnarounds and equipment hygiene between screenings.
